The key achievements

  • 4142 people experiencing homelessness were surveyed during its registry weeks and fortnights across the state
  • That is 20.87% of the 19,838 households experiencing homelessness, according to the latest Census data
  • Areas covered by the surveys included Ipswich, Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, Townsville, Cairns, Mount Isa, Toowoomba and Townsville
  • 150 service providers participated across the state, including the Red Cross, St Vincent De Paul, Anglicare, Mission Australia and the Salvation Army
  • 60 supporting organisations across Queensland also took part
  • 316 individuals and families were given homes as a result of their participation, and 430 others were given housing referrals. Other data collected indicates more households also received homes as a result of the initiative.
  • The initiative provided a number of insights into homelessness in Queensland, including that mental health is a significant contributor

By region

Bundaberg

The Bundaberg registry week surveyed 190 people identified as homeless:

  • 17% were sleeping rough
  • The average age of respondents was 22.97 years
  • 14.6% were under the age of five years old
  • 6.5% were over 55 years old
  • 33.33% of surveyed adults aged over 25 reported to have co-occurring mental health issues, chronic health problems and substance use
  • More than 40% of respondents reported unsought help for abuse or trauma

Brisbane

In the 12 months to 1 May, 2015:

  • 119 individuals and 49 families, which included 105 children, housed; a total of 168 households
  • 961 people surveyed, including 190 rough sleepers
  • More than 30% of the rough sleepers were found homes

Cairns

The Cairns registry week surveyed 680 people identified as homeless:

  • 12.5% were sleeping rough
  • The average age of respondents was 24.99
  • 13.9% were under the age of five
  • 4.5% were over 55
  • The oldest respondent was 73
  • 21.26% of survey participants reported to have co-occurring mental health issues, chronic
  • health problems and substance use

Fraser Coast

The Fraser Coast registry week surveyed 152 people identified as homeless:

  • 12.9% were sleeping rough
  • The average age of respondents was 30.1
  • 7.8% were under the age of five
  • 13.1% were over 55
  • The oldest respondent was 72
  • 26.79% of adults surveyed reported to have co-occurring mental health issues, chronic health problems and substance use
  • 45.16% of respondents reported unsought help for psychological, emotional or physical abuse or trauma
  • The longest total time spent homeless for at least one respondent was 52

Gympie

The Gympie registry week surveyed 110 people identified as homeless:

  • 22.41% were sleeping rough
  • The average age of respondents was 21.6
  • 13.3% were under the age of five
  • 6.6% were over 55
  • 42.11% of adults surveyed reported to have co-occurring mental health issues, chronic health problems and substance use
  • 46.55% of respondents reported unsought help for abuse or trauma

Ipswich

The Ipswich registry week surveyed 480 people identified as homeless:

  • 8.12% (39/480) were sleeping rough
  • The average age of respondents was 27.7
  • 48.17% of adults surveyed reported to have problematic use of alcohol and other drugs
  • 37.12% of respondents reported having a developmental disability

Mount Isa

The Mount Isa registry week surveyed 221 people identified as homeless:

  • 10.85% were sleeping rough
  • The average age of respondents was 28.4
  • 6.78% were under the age of five
  • 6.33% were over 55
  • 28.03% of participants reported to have co-occurring mental health issues, chronic health problems and substance use

Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast registry week surveyed 184 people identified as homeless:

  • 31% were sleeping rough
  • The average age of respondents was 27.9
  • 12.5% were under the age of five
  • 6% were over 60
  • 60% of adults and young adults surveyed reported problems with alcohol or other drugs.
  • 73% of respondents reported being diagnosed with mental health problems

Toowoomba

The Toowoomba registry week surveyed 266 people identified as homeless:

  • 5.26% were sleeping rough
  • The average age of respondents was 24.7
  • 12.78% were under the age of five
  • 9.02% were over 55
  • 43% of adults surveyed reported to have problematic use of alcohol and other drugs

Townsville

The Townsville registry week surveyed 442 people identified as homeless:

  • 8.37% were sleeping rough
  • The average age of respondents was 26.3
  • 9.27% were under the age of five
  • 5.2% were over 55
  • 66% of adults surveyed reported to have problematic use of alcohol and other drugs
  • 40% of respondents reported unsought help for abuse or trauma
