“I was living in Sydney with my husband and 11-year-old son when my marriage of 24 years broke up. I was left with nothing – no house, no furniture – so I decided to make a fresh start and move to Townsville to be close to my family.

My son and I had been living in Townsville for less than two months when I was hospitalised. It was the day after Christmas last year and suddenly I fell very ill and was admitted to hospital with complications due to my diabetes.
I was in hospital for two and a half months, including spending time in ICU, when I came down with pneumonia. I underwent two operations to try to save one of my legs, but it had to be amputated.
It was a very stressful time. I had no idea where we were going to live after getting out of hospital as I had been living with family who all had two-storey homes, but I was now in a wheelchair.
After I was discharged, I moved into a women’s shelter run by OzCare and was then assisted to find long-term accommodation by the Australian Red Cross’s HomeStay Program.
Red Cross did amazing things for me – they helped me while I was at the shelter and also worked hard to find me a home. It was a real challenge as I needed a home that was fully wheelchair accessible.
Three months after getting out of hospital I was offered a brand new two-bedroom fully-adaptable social housing unit.

It is more than I could have ever imagined – the kitchen is set up with low benches, the bathroom is fully wheelchair accessible and even the hanging rails in my wardrobe are lowered so I can reach my clothes.

My son and I are so happy – everyone in the community has been so supportive.”
