 Debbie

“After separating from my partner, I was living temporarily with family in overcrowded conditions in Cairns.

As a single mother with another child on the way, I tried desperately to save to secure my own home, but found myself helping support the households of my extended family.

My two-year old son and I had to keep moving between family members as there was not enough room for us to stay longer-term.

My second child was due to arrive and I needed to find a home quickly so that I could settle my family into somewhere more appropriate.

I had to find a solution and didn’t have a lot of money at the time. I’d also never rented before.

I visited the Cairns Housing Service Centre, where I was referred to RentConnect officer Kareen.

Kareen provided great advice on finding properties and what I needed to do to apply.

She helped me find a property through Professionals Real Estate at Edge Hill, who processed my application and helped me secure a townhouse.

I was also given a bond loan, which meant that an enormous weight was lifted off my shoulders.

Kareen really helped build up my confidence and provided me with advice about other available services that could help me with setting a household budget and finding furniture and whitegoods.

My son and I are really happy – we have the space we need and I have been saving to purchase some things for my new baby, who is due to arrive soon.”
