“Following the death of my long-term partner, I found myself living in a shed for nine months with my teenage daughter.
It was a very difficult time for us. We lost our former home because my partner took his own life. There was a lot of grief for myself and my daughter to deal with.
We were not only homeless, but my health was also deteriorating and I could not see a way out of our situation.
My difficulties were identified through a homeless outreach program, the HOST project, run by Blair Athol Accommodation and Support Programme on the Gold Coast.
Blair Athol helped me apply for social housing and linked me to Queensland Health’s Homeless Health Outreach Team where I was able to access mental health services.
This support and encouragement from Blair Athol allowed me to also have a go at further education and complete a Certificate II in Community Service Work – something that I would never have thought possible a year before.
My health improved and I began volunteering with Queensland Health as a companion to other people suffering with mental illness who were in hospital.
I have since completed a Certificate IV in Mental Health Services and work part-time with Queensland Health as a consumer companion to people with mental illness. I also participate on Queensland Health’s mental health team recruitment panels as a consumer representative.”
