 Kaylee

“As a child I lived in foster care, but returned to live with my parents when I was
14-years-old. This arrangement broke down after a couple of years and I found myself homeless for a period of time.

I stayed with friends most nights, but I did not have anywhere permanent and so I had to keep moving, which made it really hard to focus on my school work.

I knew I had to do something and so I approached a youth crisis accommodation service on the Sunshine Coast, operated by Integrated Family and Youth Service (IFYS).

I was pretty scared at first because I had never been at a shelter before and I was worried about how the other kids would behave.

But the IFYS team who run the Maroochydore shelter were really nice and everyone stuck to the rules so I felt safe.

IFYS assisted me to plan for my future, set goals and find long-term housing through Coast2Bay Housing Group Ltd.

They also helped me with fitting out my unit and getting me a couch, microwave, crockery and all the essentials.

I’m now 17-years-old and working two part-time jobs so I can focus more on my Year 12 studies. I have also almost completed a Certificate III in Youth Services.

I think it is because of my own experiences that I want to help other young people facing similar situations to me and I hope to find full-time work in youth services when I finish school.”
