“I was diagnosed with liver disease three years ago. Last year I was in a pretty bad way and the only option I had was a liver transplant.
I had been living in boarding houses in Cairns for the past seven years after losing my house when I got divorced and decided that I did not want to go back to that.
I didn’t know if I would receive a transplant, but I began to make plans to find a permanent home that was mine and was close to the Princess Alexandra Hospital for post-operative check-ups.
I visited the Buranda Housing Service Centre where I was introduced to RentConnect officer, Cameron, who organised to help me find a home after my operation.
I had the operation in January. It knocks you around pretty bad and I would never have been able to go out to try to find a property by myself.
Within three weeks Cameron found me an affordable and modern private rental townhouse in Richlands through the Brisbane Housing Company that was within 20 minutes of the hospital.
I didn’t think I could rent privately because of the up-front costs, but Cameron organised for a bond loan.
The property is great and I am excited about the future. I think there will be better employment prospects in Brisbane.
I am finishing off a Business Management course and am hoping to return to the career I had before I got sick as a construction site supervisor and possibly start my own business.”
