 Ron and Michelle

“My husband and I went through a devastating period. Ron’s health declined rapidly – he had problems with renal failure, diabetes, heart disease and cancer in his left lung.

We were faced with choosing between paying for vital medications for Ron or paying the rent.

Our rent became unaffordable and so we went in to the Rockhampton Housing Service Centre to apply for social housing.

We were ineligible for social housing because our adult son was living with us and, although he was working, he was also providing critical support to me with caring for Ron.

We were then introduced to RentConnect officer Wayne.

Wayne was amazing – he helped us when we were at our lowest, treated us with respect and he was warm and understanding.

Wayne found us a private rental property that was more affordable and helped us with a bond loan and rental grant because we did not have any spare cash to put up front for the bond and two weeks advance rent.

Ron’s condition deteriorated further and he spent three weeks in a palliative care centre in Rockhampton.

When Ron returned home he was restricted to a wheelchair and could no longer walk up the stairs of our two-storey home, so we needed to move again.

Wayne helped us to find a new rental property that was low-set and within our budget, and he again assisted us with a bond loan so that we could move immediately.

We both love the house – Ron can access the whole house in the wheelchair and I have turned the garage into his music room with a record player where he can play all his old records.”
