Friendships are blooming in Aspley

Flor, Woody and Pam with punnets of herbs to be planted.

Over a cup of tea and some biccies, a small group of public housing residents planted the seed of an idea of a new garden in their backyard.

Marigolds, basil, coriander and mint seedlings were planted, while residents talked about the best position for the plants, and how they would be cared for.

A few months after installation, resident Pam said having the garden was wonderful and she was already using the herbs in her cooking.

“The herbs make my food taste so much better. We have so many different herbs in there - we want to plant Chinese cabbage, but I am not sure that we will have enough of space with all the herbs! All the tenants in the complex look after the garden. It’s great to see.”

Brenda Monteiro from the Chermside Housing Service Centre came up with the idea after talking to tenants about ways they could work together to improve their complex.

She says the garden beds have been well received by the tenants so far.

"Tenants tell me they meet regularly in the community room and around the garden bed most mornings,” says Brenda.

“The garden is doing well. I believe that the social dynamics and good relationships in the complex have been strengthened through this garden bed."

This initiative is one way the department is working with tenants to design and deliver initiatives to help build caring and connective communities.Planted herbs.
