A safe home for Araluen

The North Queensland flood disaster of 2019 has been a challenging time for many in the region, but Housing and Building staff have been on hand to help people get back on their feet.

In the aftermath of the flooding, the department joined forces with several organisations including the Residential Tenancies Authority and the Real Estate Institute of Queensland to assist people to find alternative accommodation and understand their renting rights and responsibilities.

Part of the working relationship saw Housing staff collaborating directly with local real estate agents to meet the diverse housing needs of the community.

For Townsville resident Araluen, the support she received from Housing staff gave her hope in an otherwise dire situation. Araluen was 40 weeks pregnant when floodwaters damaged her private rental property and left her family without a home.

“All downstairs was flooded, including our kitchen and lounge,” Araluen said.

“The house was deemed unliveable.”

After meeting with a Housing Officer, Araluen was able to secure a new property just days later.

“I was amazed how fast they processed our application and put us up in a new home,” she said.

And there was even better news to come. On Valentine’s Day, Araluen welcomed new baby Emily to the family.

“We’re very blessed to have a new property to go to and a safe home.”

The disaster left 164 public housing properties uninhabitable, but thanks to a committed effort by our Building and Asset Services team and over 180 local contractors, all public housing properties were repaired by early April.
