Youth to Work
As an action from the Queensland Housing Strategy, we’ve changed the way rent is calculated for young people in public housing.
From 16 March 2018, the working income for people aged 24 and under is not included as household income when we calculate public housing rent; except where the young person is the tenant and/or the spouse of a tenant.
That means the income young people earn from any work they do, won’t impact on household rental obligations until after they turn 25. The household rent may be reduced if a young person is already earning an income.
We’ve been working to remove disincentives and ensure that income earned by young people doesn’t impact family rental costs, to encourage pathways to employment and training for young people living in public housing.
