Helping the community recover

Julie, a Project Officer in the department’s Brisbane office, was eager when she received the call-up to deploy to flood-ravaged Townsville as part of the Community Recovery Ready Reserve in February.

“We arrived in Townsville at 8am and were briefed in the city office—we would be Outreach Officers based at Kirwin in Council Depot buildings,” Julie said.

“Introductions were made and I gained new buddies from Rocky and Mareeba.”

“It was a whirlwind, and often confronting seeing the sadness of the people we visited who had lost their homes.”

“One man was woken by his backyard being swept into his bedroom—3.6 metres of water coming through his home as he swam with a backpack out his window to safety!”

“There were so many stories like this. People not only needed possessions replaced, but someone to talk to, and to know someone was thinking of them. I am very proud to have been there with my Outreach team to show they weren't forgotten.”

Julie was one of over 150 Housing and Public Works staff deployed to the Townsville region following the North Queensland flood disaster of 2019.

During that period, the department received more than 65,000 disaster-related calls and registered over 700 requests for emergency housing assistance.

Community Recovery Ready Reserve staff undertook a range of roles, from attending recovery hubs and providing outreach and referrals to support agencies, through to transitioning people into secure housing.

The Ready Reserve staff also supported families to obtain furniture to assist with returning to their homes.

We’re proud of our staff like Julie, who make a difference to people’s lives every day, and in particular, during very difficult times.
