About the project

The Department of Housing and Public Works is leading the delivery of the North Queensland Stadium project, which is expected to support up to 750 jobs throughout the design and construction stages.

The project provides a catalyst for urban regeneration in Townsville, attracting further investment into the region and supporting jobs growth.

Once complete, the stadium will host a multitude of sporting, cultural and community events.

North Queensland Stadium is a joint project of the Queensland Government, Australian Government and Townsville City Council, and is supported by both the National Rugby League and the North Queensland Cowboys. The stadium forms part of the Townsville City Deal signed in December 2016.

The project vision is to develop a vibrant new multi-purpose stadium that:

  • attracts visitors and investment
  • celebrates Townsville's tropical climate
  • values the water-edge environment
  • delivers high quality public spaces
  • supports urban regeneration.

The project objectives are:

  • deliver a new best-practice, multi-purpose, regional stadium in Townsville by the commencement of the 2020 National Rugby League (NRL) Premiership Season
  • maximise employment and business opportunities for the people of Townsville and the North Queensland region.

The North Queensland Stadium project is anticipated to be a catalyst directly and indirectly stimulating change that will benefit Townsville and the North Queensland region.

These changes include:

Expanding North Queensland infrastructure

  • providing a nationally-recognised stadium with a uniquely 'North Queensland' identity, that draws on world class design and architecture.

Supporting jobs and flow-on economic benefits

  • supporting initial regional employment and supply chain investment during design and construction, and future opportunities when the facility is operational
  • attracting broader investment and economic development to Townsville in the long term, as a major regional city supporting further job growth.

Fostering urban regeneration and enhanced liveability

  • transforming and activating places and spaces as an urban attraction that draws people to Townsville's city heart
  • promoting active experiences and social interaction including a broad range of sporting, community and cultural activities.

Raising the profile of North Queensland region

  • attracting investment underpinned by sporting excellence, events capability, distinct tourism offerings for domestic and international visitors, and strong and diverse local economies.

The North Queensland Stadium project is on schedule to be completed in February 2020, in time for the Elton John concert (29 February 2020) and the start of the 2020 NRL Premiership Season.

The main build works are now at peak construction activity with up to 400 workers on site each day.
