Subcontractor and employment opportunities

Engaging local industry and supporting local jobs are priorities for the North Queensland Stadium project.

Opportunities for local companies to tender for work on the stadium are being maximised by:

  • implementing Watpac’s local industry engagement plan including meeting with local businesses to assess their capability and capacity and then adjusting how works are packaged
  • applying the Queensland Procurement Policy 2018
  • contracting the local content services of the Industry Capability Network (ICN), a not-for-profit organisation that helps to engage local businesses during the procurement process
  • supporting local businesses to better position themselves to tender and win work through the Queensland Government’s Strengthening North Queensland

Watpac is targeting 80% of hours spent building the stadium to be by locals and 80% of the value of the project to be spent on local subcontractors and suppliers.

Watpac is also targeting 6.6% of the construction workforce be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people.

Trade package awards

Expressions of interest for all trade packages have now closed and the majority of trade packages for the North Queensland Stadium have been tendered.

For the remaining trade packages, shortlists of suitable businesses that registered through the ICN Gateway will be progressively invited to tender in line with the project program.

In situations where suitable businesses cannot be identified from those that have expressed interest through the ICN Gateway, or where no businesses have expressed interest through the ICN Gateway, alternative processes will be used to procure the required packages of work.

Please note the ICN Gateway has now closed for expressing interest in work packages for the North Queensland Stadium.

Watpac collates the North Queensland Stadium project statistical information, as seen below and in the construction update, from records maintained by their subcontractors and provides updates to their data to the department each month.
