North Queensland Stadium

The centrally located 25,000 seat, best-practice, multi-purpose, regional stadium is being built in Townsville. The stadium is on track to be ready to host the Sir Elton John concert and the 2020 National Rugby League (NRL) Premiership Season.

Johnathan Thurston statue

A bronze statue immortalising NRL legend Johnathan Thurston will stand in the northern plaza of the North Queensland Stadium when it opens in February 2020.

The statue will honour the contribution JT has made to the sport of Rugby League and acknowledge the significant role he plays in the North Queensland community.

Expressions of interest from artists have now closed and shortlisted artists will participate in a tender process before the successful artist is announced.

‘Warmth’ is coming

Artwork 'Warmth' will take pride of place at the North Queensland Stadium, on permanent display in the southern entry plaza.

The durable outdoor sculpture will feature a two-metre high piece of professionally crafted, curved steel.

The names of selected North Queensland places and Traditional Owner groups will be laser-cut to form a winding river design along the artwork.

The fictitious river connects all North Queensland, as people have always settled or gathered around water.

Even after the devastation of the early 2019 monsoonal event in Townsville, the North Queensland people have come together in a warm and embracing way to help each other.

With its vibrant colour and circular wrap form, the sculpture aims to capture and portray that embrace and continual warmth.

Townsville’s own Alison McDonald has been commissioned to deliver the artwork in time for the stadium’s opening in February 2020.
