Supporting local underpins success
Paul Ware Constructions is a 100 per cent Indigenous locally owned and operated company in the Torres Strait Islands, delivering quality building, construction and civil services in a region covering 15 remote island communities from its Moa Island base.
Supporting ‘local’ underpins Paul Ware Constructions and embodies the Buy Queensland procurement approach by supporting ongoing local employment opportunities, and local businesses, particularly small and medium Torres Strait Islander businesses, in its supply chain, enabling social outcomes that enhance Queenslanders’ lives.
According to Director, Paul Ware, the 100% Indigenous-owned and operated business purchases 70% of its goods and services from the Torres Strait region and 30% from Cairns.
Its supply chain ranges from Sea Swift, which barges goods and materials from Cairns to the Torres Strait Islands, concrete and raw material supplies from Thursday Island Quarry and Badu Island Foundation, local grocery from IBIS and cleaning, training and employment services from local contractors and My Pathway Services.
Paul Ware Constructions employs 23 Torres Strait Islanders, four of whom are women, three apprentices, and hosts a Torres Strait Island Regional Council apprentice plumber.
“By employing locally, employees spend their wages within the communities, additionally boosting the local economy,” Paul said.
He added that 90% of people the company engages through employment, sub-contracts and supply relationships were Torres Strait Islanders.
A Queensland Government supplier since 2000, Paul Ware Constructions has completed numerous projects across different islands for the Department of Energy and Public Works and the Department of Education.
“We are building better jobs for our people,” Paul said.
Sponsoring many local community and sporting events, ranging from the Islands of Origin hosted at Badu Island to the Thursday Island Indigenous Girls Basketball Team – The Pearls Paul Ware Constructions have established a footprint throughout the Torres Strait Islands and are committed to supporting local, sourcing local employment, supplies and services to drive local sustainability.
