A brighter future for Ayden thanks to tenancy training

Before he did the Skillsets for Successful Tenancies – Dollars and Sense training program, Ayden was having a tough time getting going in life.
“I was living with my grandparents, and I was feeling like a bit of a burden,” he says. “I was depressed and had nowhere to go.”
“I couldn’t rely on my folks to help me, and realised I had limited time with the grandparents.”
After searching online, Ayden discovered Skillsets for Successful Tenancies – Dollars and Sense, a tenancy skills training program run by inCommunity Inc.’s Tenancy Skills Institute.
Skillsets for Successful Tenancies is a free, competency-based training program which teaches people the skills they need to successfully find and sustain a tenancy.
The program covers communication, tenant rights and responsibilities, maintaining and cleaning a property, and finances and budgeting.
“I learned how to take care of myself and understand my rights and responsibilities, which I never knew about before,” says Ayden.
“I learned how to look after the house, how to pay my rent, how to take care of the kitchen, how to be a good neighbour and show courtesy.”
The program has been developed by inCommunity Inc. in consultation with the real estate sector. On completion, graduates receive a certificate which may be recognised by real estate agents, ensuring they’re better placed to secure the property for which they apply.
Darren Boettcher, from Boettcher Realty in Ipswich, says the Skillsets for Successful Tenancies – Dollars and Sense program gives assurance to all parties involved.
“The Tenancy Skills Institute certificate gives the agent and owner confidence that the applicant is going to have the knowledge and experience required to be a good tenant,” Darren said.
“And, the applicant will be confident that their application will get better traction and a better chance of being approved.”
Ayden is now renting his own place and looking for a job.
“I now know what I have to do to get going in life. My plan is to get a job, take care of myself, be a good person, and not rely on family. The program has changed the way I take care of myself. I’d recommend it to anyone.”
Skillsets for Successful Tenancies – Dollars and Sense is a partnership between inCommunity Inc. and the Queensland Government. For more information or to find a course in your area, visit the Tenancy Skills Institute.
The course of the youth services have helped me change my life, the way how I view it, and how to be responsible for myself, learn how to take care of a place and understand my rights and responsibilities as a tenant.
Now I’ve got my own place because of it. Yeah, I don’t know what else to say but a big thank you to them.
We’re 100% supportive because we feel that there are a lot of tenants out there who if they just had the right skills to be able to rent a property, we’d find no reason at all why they couldn’t have one of our rental properties.
