COVID-19: Hardship drives Jack to seek housing help

Life hasn’t been easy for Jack. Years ago, Jack lived in a boat but was unable to maintain it due to the costs. After years of disrepair, the boat, which was Jack’s home, sank.
With nowhere else to live, Jack lived in his car around the Gold Coast area for 2 years. During this time, Jack got to know some people in the homeless community and when COVID-19 hit, he was told about a homelessness service provided by Uniting Care on the Gold Coast and he asked for help.
Uniting Care work with the Department of Housing and Public Work’s Gold Coast Housing Service Centre to provide short-term accommodation and long-term housing solutions for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in the Gold Coast area.
After seeking assistance from Uniting Care, Jack was put into motel accommodation on the Gold Coast while Uniting Care works with the Gold Coast Housing Service Centre to find a long-term housing solution for Jack.
Jack suffers knee pain and takes medication for this condition. He is awaiting surgery for a knee replacement which was put on hold due to the pandemic and because Jack didn’t have a suitable place for recovery.
Despite this, Jack is independent and doesn’t require further support services while in the motel accommodation. Jack keeps in touch with Codie, his Uniting Care case worker on a weekly basis, either by phone or a visit to his motel accommodation.
Jack has been incredibly grateful for the housing support provided to him by Uniting Care and the Gold Coast Housing Service Centre and has enjoyed hot showers and access to a fridge, which he has not had for years.
Jack’s future is looking much brighter with the housing support he has received. While Jack stays in the motel accommodation, the Gold Coast Housing Service Centre is looking at suitable housing options for him, to make sure he has stable housing and a place to recover when he has his knee surgery. Jack has now made an appointment to see a specialist in the coming weeks to discuss his knee replacement and his road to recovery.
