Bundaberg East Levee
The Bundaberg East Levee is a major investment in the flood resilience of Bundaberg and the economic prosperity of the region.
The concept design for the Bundaberg East Levee consists of 1.7km of levee near the Burnett River’s southern bank, with flood gates, flood doors and pump stations.
The benefits identified in the detailed business case include:
- Increased flood protection from a Burnett River flood event
- Damage mitigated from a Burnett River flood within Bundaberg East, Bundaberg South, and the CBD without increasing flood issues in other areas of Bundaberg
- A more flood resilient community for future generations
- Economic development and opportunities for Bundaberg and the Wide Bay Region.
The project will also create local jobs and business opportunities during construction.
Project funding was announced on 8 June 2023, and plans for design and construction will now be further refined. This website will be updated as the project progresses. The Bundaberg East Levee Project is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments and is supported by the Bundaberg Regional Council.
What happens next?
The Department of Energy and Public Works will engage engineering design consultants in the coming months. The consultants will further develop the design of the levee, in readiness to consult with the Bundaberg community and project stakeholders.
You will have opportunities to ask questions and have input into the design process through scheduled consultation events. This is likely to be in early to mid-2024.
