Rothwell: Social housing for Moreton Bay

A new social housing property will open in Rothwell providing temporary accommodation for people in housing need in the Moreton Bay region. The 18-unit property will support people to find their feet before moving into longer term housing.

Located on the site of a former aged care property, the Department of Housing is undertaking an extensive refurbishment of the site to ensure it can provide safe and secure accommodation for those in need of housing or at risk of homelessness.

Featuring 18 semi self-contained furnished rooms, each unit will contain a kitchenette and a secure bathroom shared between two rooms, which will be made available for single adults and couples eligible for social housing as well as individuals with mobility issues and the elderly.

The property is centrally located to essential services with grocery stores, schools and public transport all within one kilometre of the site.

Increasing housing supply

The opening of the Rothwell site follows the successful repurposing of former aged care properties in Clayfield, Toowoomba and the Redlands and delivers on the Queensland Government’s commitment to providing more support for people in housing need and increasing the supply of housing.

Works on refurbishing the property are expected to be completed by the end of 2023. We expect to welcome tenants in January 2024.

Public consultation

Members of the public are encouraged to have their say on the proposed development through lodging a submission.
