Supporting accessibility modifications in rental homes
People with disability have a right to request home modifications to their rental property.
Modifications can make homes safer and help people with disability need less support. This means they can live more independently.
To support this, we have partnered with the Queenslanders with Disability Network to deliver the Small changes, big difference campaign, designed to help people learn how to ask for and get accessibility modifications installed in rental homes in Queensland.
The campaign provides resources and videos featuring real people to help tenants, landlords, property managers, and body corporate groups understand the importance of accessibility in rental homes. It highlights how changes can make homes safer and improve independence for people with disability, while also benefiting others like older Queenslanders, parents with young children, carers, and visitors.
All renters have the right to ask for home modifications and the campaign offers practical tips on how to make a strong, well-supported request. It also aims to build awareness about the rules and responsibilities around home modifications, promote understanding of the needs of tenants with disability, and encourage positive attitudes towards accessibility in the rental market.
