The 2026 Queensland Youth Week community event grants have been finalised, with inspiring projects selected across the state—each led by young people determined to make a difference in their communities.
The event grants provide up to $10,000 for young Queenslanders aged 12-25 years to design and deliver local events during youth week in partnership with an auspice organisation.
Among this year’s recipients is Youth Caring for Country, Caring for Community at the Capricorn Caves north of Rockhampton, a youth-led event bringing people together through environmental action and connection.
Driven by a passion for protecting local ecosystems, the team behind the event is creating a day filled with hands-on activities, cave tours, wildlife experiences and youth-led stalls.
“It’s about bringing young people, families and the community together to learn about the environment, help care for local ecosystems and celebrate the work we’ve been doing, including protecting important species like Ghost Bats,” says 11-year old event coordinator Pearl.
Pearl says the event is supported by the Capricorn Conservation Council, where she is part of their youth sub-committee.
“Being able to lead something like this and see everyone come together has been really rewarding, especially knowing it’s something we’ve created as young people,” says Pearl.
“[This event] creates a safe, inclusive space where young people feel valued, while also helping people learn how to care for the environment and get involved in their community.”
For Pearl, the best part of winning an event grant will be seeing the community come together.
And for those considering attending, Pearl says, “It’s a fun, welcoming day where you can connect, learn something new and be part of something that really matters.”
Youth Caring for Country, Caring for Community will take place on Friday 17 April from 11.40am-10pm in partnership with Capricorn Conservation Council.
