Willows Sports Field demolition
The demolition of the stadium on Willows Sports Field, previously known as 1300SMILES Stadium, was completed in August 2023.
The field in Kirwan is the former home of the North Queensland Cowboys National Rugby League (NRL) Team. The team moved to the state-of-the-art Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville’s CBD at the start of the 2020 season.
Pedestrian bridge refurbishment
The Willows pedestrian bridge – located between the Willows Sports Field and Ryan Catholic College/Canterbury Drive – will be refurbished in mid-2024. The bridge refurbishment works are expected to take approximately two months and will complete the Willows Sports Field demolition project.
The works will include general repair and repainting to improve the bridge’s condition and extend its useful life.
