Sustainable electricity supply options for the Daintree
Between 2018 - 2020 the Queensland Government worked with the Daintree community and stakeholders to deliver the Daintree Electricity Supply Study.
This study assessed and compared possible fit-for-purpose options for reliable and sustainable electricity supply for the Daintree region into the future.
While numerous studies have been conducted in the past, these have not fully investigated:
- how electricity supply options would be delivered from a commercial perspective
- the costs that Daintree households and businesses would be responsible for, including how much they would be charged for electricity.
The study filled the gaps and comprehensively canvassed all aspects of energy supply, including recent advances in electricity generation and storage techniques.
Queensland Study findings
An independent evaluation and multi-criteria assessment of different electricity supply options for the Daintree region was completed by KPMG with the support of GHD in 2019.
This analysis examined 6 potential options for electricity supply in the Daintree. You can access full copies of the Daintree Electricity Supply Study reports here:
The Queensland Government has not made a decision to support any particular option at this time.
The Queensland Government is aware that the Federal Government has announced funding for a Daintree Microgrid project.
The Queensland Government awaits further details on the Federal Government microgrid project.
